FP vs biometrics, here's the deal!

Did my fingerprinting today and biometrics Friday, and got lots of answers regarding fingerprinting and biometrics. Here they are in a nutshell:
Code 1 = FP all 10 fingers for FBI check. If you do NOT receive letter in mail within 1 week, you are cleared. If you receive a letter within 1 week, you either have a criminal record OR the FP quality was not good enough for FBI to run the check. If FP was not good enough, you have to redo FP.
Code 2 = biometrics, when you are cleared with code 1 through FBI, you take 1 picture, sign, and FP right index finger. This will be used for the actual printing of the GC.
Code 3 = both code 1 FP and code 2 biometrics at the same time. Ideally, ask to get code 3 done the first time around so you do NOT have to come back for more. I'm not sure if the ASC will let you do this, but it does not hurt to ask.

thanks for the clarification one more time!

BTW, you said if you receive letter from CIS, you are required to do the FP again, how could that be? If criminal records were found, you then are required to do the FP again? I don't know about that. Can anyone confirm it?

If the quality is not good, you were not allowed to leave from ASC, because everyone who had FP experience before, knows this: the FP machine will usually tell you if it is pass or fail. If fail you have to do it again till you get the "PASS" in green. In that case the possibility of redoing FP is quite low.

Thanks

Thanks bjorn, I did wonder why some call it fp while others call biometrics. First time I went there with the finger print notification, they carefully took print of all my 10 fingers, but next time, during my EAD renewal, they did only 1 finger (or one from both hands, don't remember!).

Thanks a lot for the clarification. When I did my first fingerprinting, it was a code 3, i.e. 10 fingers+signature+photo. I am in Vermont service center.

buzzhd,
Yes, the ASC does a quality control check both through the green light on the screen and a second person double checking and certifying. However, I specifically asked about this issue and the ASC person told me that the FBI can still decide that the FP quality is NOT good enough and order a redo of the FP. The FBI has their own quality control that completely overrides the ASC quality control. Generally, a pass at ther ASC means a pass at the FBI, but according to the ASC person I spoke with, there are instances where the ASC does pass the FP through the ASC quality control even though they know the FP came out a little light, but the FBI fails the FP quality. I had 3 fingers with a "light" print with an orange light and red asterix next to them, according to the computer AND both people in the office, yet the ASC passed them due to both people reviewing them manually decided they should still pass the FBI quality control check. However, they did tell me that the FBI MAY order a redo, but the ASC felt that my FP were good enough to at least send them to the FBI and let the FBI decide. If I get a letter in the mail within one week, the FBI did not pass my FP due to poor quality, and if I do NOT receive a letter within a week, the FBI passed them.

..

bjorn,
you can call the FBI ph. # and ask them. They send the FP results to USCIS the same day.

pras01,
Really??? How do I get the phone number? Off the FBI website?
Thanks for the tip.

Hi bjorn,

Is the FBI fingerprint check related to the FBI name check? or Are they two different things? If they are different, how long does the FBI fingerprint check take?

Mr. Green,
I did not specifically aske about if fingerprinting is related to the name check, but based on the information the ASC gave me and other posts on this forum, I conclude that they are indeed related and that the FP check is also the name check. This check takes only a couple of hours according to the ASC and is done automatically through the FBI computers and immediate sent to the USCIS for updating of your USCIS I-485 record. As soon as the ASC hits submit when you are done with the actual FP, it goes to the FBI and is checked and an automatic response sent to the USCIS within hours.

FP involves two processes: one is criminal records/background check and the other is name check. They are two different things/processes as I understand.

You are right, criminal records FP check part is pretty quick. However name check can take months, or years, ie. 1-4 months or anyway from 2 to 3 years. If you get a chance to take a look at another thread called "Stuck in Name Check" you will get an idea how bad the name check could be.

We all certainly hope the name check could be as fast as criminal background check. However we are facing the reality here and sometimes we have to press our own luck.

But then the question is, when does the name check get initiated? When you do the fingerprints? or when you submitt you I-485?

So FP and name check are different processes. I'm curious as to why the FP check only takes a few hours and the name check potentially a couple of years. It's only a matter of running the FP and name through a database.

that's question I would like to know too, and that's question everyone is debating on it:

Someone says:
Name check is initiated when you submit your I-485

Other would say:
Name check starts when you submit your FP

But either way, name check takes much much longer than FP criminal background check.
