FP and Biometrics both required ?

We just finished giving our FP last week. Today we received Biometrics Appointment.

Can anyone clarify why we need to do both FP and Biometrics?

If you had an AP/EAD one would have completed biometrics. I think in the absence of this one would be required to both at FP/I-485 processing time.
