Hi ari,
Thanks for the clarification. I read through the AOS interview experiences again last night and listed all the documents that were requested by the officer or given by the interviewee. And affidavits seem to have figured only in a couple of cases (in the kamya thread). So, you are right - its not a mandatory or even commonly used piece of evidence (I guess its not "official", right?).
Those affidavits are not required for AOS
We had included affidavits to supplement our bunch of joint documents. I guess we'll have to sort out which ones are more important.
At this point, we have only:
- 2005 tax returns filed jointly
- Joint checking account statement
- Joint savings statement
- Beneficiary on each other's life insurance
- his phone bills
- (Maybe) one credit card statement
Other documents:
- Emails
- Boarding passes with itineraries
- Wedding pictures
- Pictures with friends / family
In the process of collecting:
- my phone bills (from UK a year ago - the calls are itemized here)
- AAA insurance policy (not in both names, but as additional insured driver)
- him as beneficiary on my 401k
(Not useful?) documents (can anyone comment on whether we should take these at all?):
- my phone bills (current bills - but I have the Verizon Freedom package because the calls are unlimited; they don't provide itemized calls, called Verizon to ask if they could provide call logs, and they say they are unable to do this, the whole point of this package is not to, blah, blah

)
- Listing him as emergency contact at work
We DON'T have (I guess these are the more important papers!):
- Joint lease
- Utility bills
- Health insurance

Take whatever docs you have that show both names and joint ownership of assets and liabilities. Whatever you have collected looks okay. Dont forget birth, marriage certificates.
Some other questions:
1) The tax filing status on my W2 is still "single". I have tried to figure out whether I should change this, but the W4 states that if you are married filing separately, you should leave it as "single" (or something to that effect). I've had to file my state return separately since he was not resident here. Will this be a problem during the interview? (The return itself is joint, so it shouldn't matter?)
You could have saved a bunch of money by filing as married
.
2) Should we prepare a fresh I864 affidavit of support? Nothing has changed since we filed the package in Feb, so, I'm assuming just the paystubs for the past few months and the tax return should do?
You dont need a new one
3) I693 - already sent it with the original filing. Nothing needs to be done now?
You are all set
4) Folder with documents in individual names? (Ari - I saw that you had this ?)
That was my attempt to organize all the documents i needed for the interview. It is upto you how you organize yours
Sorry! This post has become really long!
Appreciate your input!
Cheers,
Priya
