Thanks for the prompt reply.. I am related to the sponsor's wife.. (She is my cousin) (The husband is the sponsor) Exactly, he does not qualify financially so from reading your response I am the "Co-sponsor" and I don't live with them.. Husband (sponsor) is in the U.S. and so am I.. family being sponsored is out of country.. I have already filled out an I-864 and so has the sponsor ( husband) Do I also need to fill out the I-864A???.. Thanks again..Need to get more specific about the terminology. The petitioner (I guess "the husband") will always need to be a sponsor, regardless of whether they meet the income requirements. He will fill out an I-864.
There are two other types of people: 1) a "household member" of the sponsor, and 2) a "joint sponsor".
I-864A is for a household member of a sponsor; for example, the petitioner's spouse or dependent; a sponsor can add his/her household members' income to his/her income for the household income.
On the other hand, a "joint sponsor" qualifies on just their own income. They do not combine incomes with another sponsor. A joint sponsor would fill out an I-864. (A joint sponsor can also include household members, if necessary.)
Which one are you? I would guess you are a joint sponsor, if you are not related to them and do not live with them.

You are probably acting as a joint sponsor. So the I-864 was right. Did you check 1.d. "I am the only joint sponsor"?
