I need a couple documents from my home country (uk) to support my naturalizatino application. Does anyone know how I can get a check in the US that is made out in pounds sterling? I tried sending a money order in $ that is more than enough to cover the fee, however the govt depts that got the money orders are unable to accept anything other than pounds.

Scruit,

I'm also originally from the UK, and in the past, I've had to send funds overseas. I wanted to mention that sometimes, it's possible to telephone a government office, and pay by credit card. (If you have one). I find it very convenient, and it saves the hassle of going to the bank and having an international money order drawn up. It also saves the time it takes to mail a letter overseas. Maybe not all government offices accept payment by credit card, but it wouldn't hurt to go to their website, and find out if they do.

I just went to the website for the register office I have my birth record at. It stated:

"If you are writing from abroad payment has to be made in the form of an international money order expressed in Pounds Sterling.

Alternatively, payment can be made by Credit or Debit Card for births registered more than eighteen months ago. In this instance you may obtain the certificate directly from the Registrar General’s Office. A credit or debit card number must accompany a phone or email message, quote card type; expiry date and card number. Telephone: (XXXX) XXXXXXX or email ...."

Scruit, I'm just quoting the above as an example. As I mentioned, I'm not sure if all British governement offices accept credit card payments. But you should be able to find the information you need on their official website.

Hope this helps!

This just burns me up... I went to two banks and BOTH told me there was no such thing as an international money order, and that checks/money orders coudl only be made out in dollars. And I work for one of the biggest banks in the world!

I'll have to go back and ask them to clarify.

Western union

Scruit,
If you have a family member or a friend in UK, then you can send them money and ask them to send a cashier's check in sterling pound for you directly to the Gove office in UK, if you have enough time.
Just a thought.

:bawling: Even the local Western Union location told me that money orders are only available in $!

You need to get an international bank draft, most major banks will offer this. Type in "international bank draft" in google/yahoo and you should get a few sources on the internet. I think they cost $10+ for an online order and $30+ at a bank (a more trusted source) like Wachovia.
