From this and other forums I see two main areas that cause a lot of problems for people.
1. I cannot emphasize this enough: read the instructions. Know what you should be putting as country of chargeability, know how to enter your name properly, know who you should be listing as derivatives and when, don't put yourself as single when you have a spouse, don't leave your kids off because they won't enter with you, etc. So many problems arise because people haven't followed the instructions, which are very clear, and are very clear about factors like the aforementioned which will get you disqualified if you put the wrong answer.
2. Please, please ...do not use an agent. Apart from the unscrupulous ones who will try to charge you when there is no charge and the forms are simple, I have been flabbergasted at the number of posts on forums I have seen quoting agents who have given bad or even downright incorrect "advice". (Example: one told someone to ignore what was on the dvselectee website and wait till KCC sent her a list of documents she needed to bring to the interview...) You can get all the help you need if there's something you don't understand from people on this and other forums who have been through the process.
