My wife's surname and given name are not seperately mentioned in her passport. Surname field shows the full name and Given Name field is left blank.
Her H4 visa stamp therefore shows her Given Name as FNU.
I am preparing to file I-485 in July. My attorney thinks that we should apply with the name as it is right now and change the names in the passport later.
I called the Indian consulate and they told me it is easy to make this change. So I am planning to go to Indian consulate next week to get this done.
Could any of suggest if it is OK to do this before filing for I-485?
I also enquired about changing my wife's last name in her passport to my first name. The reasoning behind this is that if I do this now, she could get the correct name in her SSN and driver's license in future. (she doesn't have a drivers license or SSN right now).
Has anybody done this before applying I-485? Please suggest.
