FirstName and middle name interchanged

My name on Green card, passport and SSN is John Mike Smith.

"Mike" is really my First Name.

I've used Mike John Smith ( like Mike J. Smith) in all other places like Bank account, IRS, Credit Card, License.

I've not listed out the name used above in N400 in other names used, Thinking Both names are same just first name interchanged. I just used name like it is in green card Will it be a problem in processing.


Should i update in the N400 later on while FP'ing ?
When can i update?
Which name should i use after i get Citizenship?


One more question: I joined my friend's business as board of director with out any compensation(payroll). Should i have mentioned this information in employment history in N400.. ? should i update it during interview?

You do not get a chance to change N400 while FP. They don't have access to it.

When can i update?

Most appropriate place now is during interview. You can make many changes to N400 there

What name do you have on your birth certificate? Based on my exp, my IO (and my wife's IO too) went exclusively by birth certificate. I have exact same name in all my documents but BC does not have middle name printed. She would not give me Nat cert with middle name even though GC/SSN/Passport/License and "you name it" document had my middle name everywhere. Ofcourse your experience may be different with different IO at different DO.

If you get a good IO, use the name that you like (Which is Mike as first name I believe) make sure you change SSN, license etc to match what you chose. Govt is very bad with such things, different names can mean different people for them.

No, they make you write your name as it will appear on Nat cert on a piece of paper in front of them. They also ask you to write exact same name on the photo. This is the name that appears on cert.

Nat cert is not even ready by this time. It gets ready before oath (not at the time of interview)

Whether you can use first name or not depends on what is first name in your BC (if your IO is very strict about BC, like mine was) If your IO allows, you should be able to get it.

I have read cases (In CA region)where IO did not check BC and gave Nat cert with name on GC. I even read a case where IO asked person what name would be on cert and accepted it. I hope your IO is like that and not like mine.
