first name problem

FIRST NAME : KRISHNA VIGNESHWARAN
LAST NAME : KONDA KRISHNAMURTHY

I am here on F1 visa and am from INDIA. when i tried to apply for SSN they said my name is too long to fit in to the system and cannot accept my form. When i contacted the BORder security for the issue , they said we cant help in this matter. So i need a legal solution for this so that i can apply for SSN and other necessary ones. And another question is that can I legally change my first name here in US ?

What is in your passport? on your F1 visa? What did you put in your F1 visa application?
