Fingerprint vs background check???

Is there a difference in the processing time for the background check as opposed to FP exam? My online status says that the results of my FP exam are back but no mention of a background check.

Does anyone know if they are approved at the same time? My FP was approved after about 14-15 months....

Hi:

To be pedantic, the "background checks" include all the required security checks:
1. FP check
2. Name Check
3. IBIS check

IBIS and FP check results are USUALLY received the same day or within a couple of days ---- the name check is usually the one that causes people most problems. It may be completed in a couple of weeks or it may take years, if manual checks are required after registering a "hit."

Thanks,

I do not see a way to check the status of my name check, however. USCIS customer service does not seem to have way to receive updated info on this issue.

And any reason why a FP would take 15 months?

P.S. What is IBIS?

There is no way to check on the status of a namecheck. The check is carried out by the FBI through their NNCP (National Name Check Program). It involves the checking of all possible spellings and combinations of your names in a variety of different databases. I have heard that these can include FBI, CIA and Interpol files. If a hit is found the file has to be manually checked even if it is in some FBI field office half way across the globe.

There is no system to personally check on the status of your check with FBI. CIS claim that they constantly check but I have yet to see any evidence of it.

Sorry to sound so gloomy, I have basically been drained of all enthusiasm by the namecheck fiasco.
