Financial Sponsorship

I (naturalized citizen) sponsored my stepson for a green card. Now I am divorced and want to withdraw my financial support. My ex (who is a US citizen) currently resides in Poland with his son (the sponsored stepson) and is also listed as co-sponsor. Immigration tells me that even though we are divorced I can not remove my name from financial responsibiity. This doesn't seem right. Is there a means of doing this??

The sponsorship obligation continues until the sponsored alien naturalizes, has worked or can be credited with 40 quarters of work, leaves the United States permanently, or dies. However, a sponsor or the sponsor's estate remains liable for any support or requests for repayment of benefits that arose before the support obligation ended.

If you can prove that the immigrant you sponsored has left US permanently, your obligation for sponsorship ends.
