I am in the process of filing I485. Can anyone tell me how long will it take to get a green card once I485 if filed? I am filing jointlywith my wife. Will my wife have any problems since she is holding a F1 visa?

Also can anyone educate me on the jargons used in this forum: what like RFE, etc?

Thanks so much for all the info.

Rgds

I485 time and terms

It really depends in what state you are. In California it takes about a year :( may be more or less in other resions.
Your wife shouldn't have any problems. Until you GC is approved she keeps her F visa and after that, she is a resident.
What terms in the jargon are you looking for? RFE stands for Request For Evidence. When the INS wants more information about anything (you, your work, your wife, anything) they send you by mail a RFE form and hold the process until they are satisfied with the evidence you sent them.

I485 and F visa

My attorney told me that once the I485 is filed, my wife F1 visa is no longer valid and she cannot travel out of the country. Can anyone tell me how long will this process take. I intend to leave the country with my wife for a short vacation back asia. and i am now confused and worried we cannot leave us till we get our GC which may take years?

Thanks for any help here.

What next after filing I485

Hey guys,

I have just filed my I485 jointly with my wife who has a F1 visa. What comes next and how long is the wait before we get any news from INS?

I am really anxious as we intend to go home for a vacation this summer.

Appreciate any response.

Thanks in advance.

Ask your attorney to apply for Advance parole if you or your wife wants to go out of US and enter again.

get a parole before you leave USA

once you file immigration category, your non-immigration status is in danger except you have a parole for visit purpose. Otherwise you will be regarded as immigration-intention and get refused to extend or apply for a non-immigration visa.

Best way is stay here, have your passport stamped and get the card. after 9-11, everything changed.

I-485 needs 12-18 months in VSC, no matter EB1-2-3. Eventually, you will get what you want. :p
