Hi,

Quick question on 'Fee payable to' for N-400. I see three different things on three different web pages. Payable to:
US Citizenship and Immigration Services
USCIS
US Department of Homeland Security

Which one is correct? I sent mine payable to 'US Department of Homeland Security'.

Thanks,
SC

From the USCIS Site:
Current Naturalization Fees
The biometric services fee for having your fingerprints taken is:$ 70.00
The fee for filing your naturalization application is:$320.00
$You must send the $390.00 fee with your application.

Pay the fee with a check or money order drawn on a U.S. bank payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.Do not use the initials DHS or USDHS. Do Not Send Cash.

This page mentions that the fees must be paid to "US Citizenship and Immigration Services".

hm11 - could you please post the USCIS link that mentions "US Department of Homeland Security"?

Thanks

Go to USCIS web site and check page 59 of Guide to Naturlization and it clearly says; "You must send the $390.00 fee with your application. Pay the fee with a check or money order drawn on a U.S. bank payable to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Do not use the initials DHS or USDHS. Do Not Send Cash."

It may be OK to write USCIS or Department of Homeland Security. But if the guide says Homeland Security then why put USCIS. I would write "U.S. Department of Homeland Security". Rest is up to you guys.

either one is good, plus you can go to the USCIS website and find out. It's no big deal, let us talk about the real critical issues instead!!
Come on now, do your homework before you ask!!

Do EXACTLY what the Guide to Naturalization states and don't be swayed by what you see elsewhere or read as accepted abbreviations. The instructions are very clear and recently updated, so I don't understand why people are questioning this.

I sent my payment last month with the payee as "U.S. Department of Homeland Security" as specified in the Guide. If you want to test the system using something different, go right ahead.

Thank you. Thats what I am saying from the begining. One should go with the latest version of Guide to Naturlization.

If you can find this forum to ask this kind of question, so you have access to a computer. So you can go to www.uscis.gov and browse.

Ok guys, the reason I asked the question is I found three different ones on three different INS pages. My experience with INS is, they sent one of my earlier applications (not citizenship) back because I wrote something like 'Three Ninty Dollars and 0/100' instead of 'Three Hundred and Ninty Dollars' on the check. There is nothing wrong in asking legitimate questions. Thats what these forums are for. If you think its a silly question, move on, someone else will answer.

Harry2005,

This is an unbelievable moment, but for the first time in my life I am actually siding with the INS. I would have returned the check myself.

Notwithstanding, of course you may ask any question you like (related to immigration). However, you must take into account that some people have various degrees of patience, so you should take into account you will get all kinds of answers...

Good luck with the application , Yalag

I personally, like probably most of others, expect people to do their homework before posting questions. It might be a false assumption, but I believe it is the reason that some people are getting annoyed at questions that can be easily answered by checking the USCIS site and reading the instructions.

I agree with that, I would expect the same myself. By reading my original query, one would realize that I read the CZ guide and beyond. Thats why I listed three options I found at various INS pages, instead of asking whom/where etc. From that reading, it wasn't so obvious (atleast to me) that Homeland Security one is the right one. Granted, few days ago I asked a question about photos, that was so obvious and right at the begining of the citizenship page. Somehow that link slipped through my reading, I'm normally a little more thorough than that.

Anyway, I appreciate you folks with knowledge and patience who answer the same newbie questions over and over.
