FBI Name check

At what point the name check is initiated? Does USCIS send it to FBI on receipt of I-485 or at some later time? Is it initiated at the point of FP?

How do I know whether it has been initiated for my case? I called FBI number and left my details on voice mail. The VM asked to spell the name, date of birth, A# and a day time phone number. How long does it take them to respond back?
