FBI Name Check results - why?

Could someone please shed more light? Why are some members faxing the FBI to know the results of "Name Check"? Is a "Name check pending" a likely/only cause for delay in approving the I-485? Or is it just for self-assurance that the case is not pending from that angle? If a name check is not complete, is there anything that could be done?

Gurus, please debate on why this step is (un)necessary.

I just got an answer for my inquiry that I faxed to them regarding the name check. It sais that the name check was completed in August 2004, which means that for the last 2 years my case has been collecting dust because USCIS was waiting on the name check. As far as I know, I'm not alone.

Plus, if you know for sure that the name check has been completed, you can put some pressure on USCIS through congressmen, stating that the name check was completed and USCIS should start working.

Could you please let me know how long does it take to get the reply from FBI regarding the name check.

Thanks

For me, it took a little more than a month (I don't remember the exact date when I faxed the inquiry). Obviously, the time may vary.

I faxed a inquiry request to FBI this morning asking to check the status of the name check on my case. Let's see how long it takes for the FBI to reply.

I just cannot believe the excuse for US CIS that my case had been delayed due to the lack of manpower to complete the routine fingerprint checks. Sure, they only had 292+ days to finish it. But then, they could not (or would not) give any definite indication of when the checks can be completed. :(

I remember on this forum, there was a post saying you could call this number at FBI, 304-625-5590, and choose option #3 to speak to a representative. While the holding time is long, some people said in this forum that they actually spoke to a lady and found out about their status right away.

Just to let you know - there are 2 types of checks, fingerprint check and name check. Fingerprint check takes up to 1 day, name check can take weeks/months/years. There are different fax #s/phone #s for fingerprint checks and name checks, you can find them both on this site.

Thanks. It took them only one day to finish the fingerprint checks in my 1st FP. I think it is the name check caused the delay. But I will inquiry the fingerprints result too. Thanks again. :)

INS sent FBI my name check request in May 2003, it is still pending ,
that is really not fair, just think about so many people afterward alreay got their name checks cleared.
