Question 6 at http://www.usvisanews.com/wedquest121802.html might be of some interest with reference to recent confusion about FBI-checks. However, the underlined portion seems to hint that those with completed FP do not need any new check??!! If so, then why the wait?

6. I have a question regarding your article on INS slowdown: if the "slowdown" (i.e. halt) in the I-485 (and other benefits) adjudications has been caused by INS not receiving the results of security background checks from the FBI, what does the standard message recorded on the INS Automated Voice Mail and Online Status Check mean? For me, as for many other people who are still waiting, it says, "On May 22, 2002, the results of your fingerprint review for your I485 APPLICATION TO ADJUST TO PERMANENT RESIDENT STATUS were received and processing has resumed on your case. We will mail you a notice if further action is needed, or when a decision is made."
Wasn't the fingerprint check by the FBI supposed to provide the security background check? Are there several checks the FBI is supposed to perform and report on separately?
A: In addition to the fingerprint check, they also perform a name check on various security-related databases. However, once the FBI has indicated that the check has been performed, INS should be in a position to resume processing of the case. In other words, as far as your case is concerned, the delay now appears to be on INS' end.
