One of my friend applied his I-485 (Texas service center) on 16th Dec (Receipt Date) last year and got his card on Jan 29th. I couldn't believe that but that was it... not even 45 days... He is in ROW category but still this is unbelievable man... My case is stuck in VSC for last 11 months... I also heard that USCIS picked up 70-80 cases randomly at each center to test their new system and they were approved in no time (don't ask me how it could be rumor) ... may be my friend got lucky...

Yes, sometimes they do weird things - i.e. there are sudden spikes in efficiency
One of my friends filed his I-140/I-485 at the VSC in the EB-1-EA category in April 2005. He received his GC in hand in September 2005.
