No where it says, one must continuously reside 180 days each calender year in US, to be eligible for Citizenship.

There are two simple requirements.

1) Continuous Residence:
5 years as a Permanent Resident without leaving the
United States for trips of 6 months or longer

2) Physical Presence in the United States:
Total 30 months in five years.

You can take trips less than 6 months, without much problem.

If the trip is more than six months and less than a year, you might have broken the rule of continuous residence. You can prove otherwise by providing the required documents.

If the trip is more than a year, you definitely broken the rule of continuous residence, unless one qualifies for N-470.

But, the question is nowhere it says the condition of continuously present for
180 days each calender year.

Thanks.

I think it is an implied assumption. When you say "You can take trips less than 6 months, without much problem." people assumes that you have to stay within US for 6 months.
Now, your argument is ..'one can travel for, say, 5 months..come back to US and stay for 1 month, travel again for 5 months and so on..'. Did I hear you correctly ???

I feel definitely one can do. There are few problems. This makes INS officer feel you are not residing in US most of the time. If you show valid reason, it is possible. Also you have to be careful of meeting the requirement of physical presence.

If this occurs every year, obviously there will be a problem. Once or twice having valid reason in 5 years, might be possible.

I think Joe has a valid point.
Even though law might not explicit say time frames like 180 days etc....many times it might be upto the validating officer to interpret things. Whatever it is, one has to prove continous residence in US. Frequent travel abroad and residing in US only for few months per year...can jeopardise things for you.
