F1 with New I-20

Hello everyone,

Been looking for some help regarding this issue. My current friend's situation:

1. F-1 Valid until 2009
2. Old I-20 expired in April 2008
3. New I-20 issued recently

How do we bring the F-1 back into status?

Baba, your friend has no situation. He's fine. F-1 visa in his passport is used only for the reentry purposes; it can be one time or multiple reentry visa. When his old I-20 expired he had 60 days of grace period to decide what to do next; transfer or leave the country. If he transfered and got the new I-20 within that period then he is fine. If not, then it means he was out of status for some time, which might not be a big problem. But I don't think he was out of status since the new I-20 was approved and issued. Bottom line, your friend is on F-1 status as long as he/she is maintaining the I-20.
