F1 with 485 pending

First, thank you for contributing your time to help people .

I know someone who is in following situation,

1. he received his F1 Approval Notice not long ago (by the Application to Change Nonimmigrant Status, the Form I539)
2. soon after, he received his EAD, as his parent filed the I485 for his family members

My question is, can this guy work without any restriction now?

He told me that he did ask above question to someone with the school’s international student office. Although he was told that he is a ‘freeman’ now, I’d like to ask it again, just to confirm .

In addition, if he can work, then what will his status be once he started to use his EAD?

With the pending I-485, he is no longer on F1, rather he is in "pending AOS" status.

Just curious, as I don’t understand why he is no longer on F1 even if he didn’t use his EAD.

If we look at a H1 holder with a pending I-485, we know that the H1 holder can still keep his H1 if he didn't use his EAD.

Is the treatment different to a F1?
