f1 visa expired, i-20 valid can i travel?

situation:
f1 visa expired 2 years ago but my i-20 is valid never skipped a semester.

question:
i want to travel back home and was wondering if i could get my f1 visa renewed? what are the my chances? is it a sure thing and if so will it take long to issue a new f1 visa because i can't skip a semsester in my program thank you.

any input would be greatly appreciated thank you
 
I agree with GCman. I don't think it will take "long", I believe it's basically the same process as applying for a new visa. You have to go through the interview process and all. I believe you also have to show proof of funding, etc. However, not every Consular Officer asks for this. I wasn't asked, but my friend was.
