F1 to J1- Change of status

Hi,

My F1 is going to expire this month end. I applied for change of status to J1 last month , but haven't received approval yet. It is under processing.

So do I need to go back to my home country if I dont get the approval for J1 before my F1 expiry?

Please help me. Thanks in advance.
