F1 to H4 Change in Status

Hi,

I am currently a graduate student with an F1 visa in the US. Due to personal reasons, I won't continue after the end of this quarter.

My wife has been an H1B worker for the past 4.5 years, and still has 1.5 years remaining on her H1B.

I am inquiring about the process to change my nonimmigrant status from F1 to H4 as a dependent of my wife. I have downloaded form I-539 from the USCIS website and would appreciate some input on the following:

1) What is the gist of the process? Especially since I am applying to be her dependent long after her H1B has been approved.

2) Besides the documentation outlined on the I-539, should I also send proof of my current status (F1 and I94)?

3) How long is the process? Should my current F1 status expire before my change of status is approved, do I have to leave the country?

4) Any other insights also appreciated.

Thank you for the help.
