F1 student & NON-issue of SSN!

I applied for a SSN today and was told they are not issued to F1 students anymore.

How does a STUDENT open a bank account without SSN?

How does a student get Medical Insurance - if Insurance companies insist on a SSN first?

What now??

SSN Issue

Hello:

You can file for a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). That would suffice for bank accounts etc but not for drivers license.

In any case you need to get a TIN number for filing your tax returns even if you have no income.

You can get the necessary form from IRS site. Usually they take a couple of weeks for this.
