F1 student coming for ESL training. Is return plane ticket required?

Hello,
If you are coming to US for a one year ESL education with an F1 visa, are you required to show your "return ticket" at the gate of entry? This is always required for tourist visa holders. How about F1 visa holders coming to US for a short term ESL education?
