Dear Khanna

This is Raj from New york.Am a Master's student in biomedical sciences currently am doing my thesis last week my International student service's said that they have terminated my f1 status as am unable to submit the thesis extension form for spring 2009. They have suggested me to either apply for Reinstatement of f1 status or make a rentry to U.S. Some of my friends told that i can go either Mexico or canada as a visitor and get back with in couple of day. Please let me know which is the best option for me right now. Please sir this is really important for me since am working on my thesis from more that 8 months.

Thank you Waiting for your reply.

ReInstatement

Hi
You have to apply for Reinstatement as soon as possible.
Talk to your DSO at International Students office.
Ask them what you need to apply for Reinstatement - do that asap.
When did you get that letter from your Universoty and how many days you have Legally?
Let me know.

Hello taurus

Thank you very much for your concern . This is what happened am doin my thesis project from mount sinai hospital and it was completely out of my mind that i have to do some paper work for the extension for the spring 2009. i got a call on 13th february from ISS that they have to terminate my status if am unable to submit the form by 5pm on 13th february. The reason i couldnt submit is that my mentor who is helping me in the thesis was undergoing chemotherapy for cancer so she made delay in signing the extension form later she signed it by 11th of the february and on the same day i took the form to my department to get signed by my department chair and unfortunately she was also on vacation because it was long weekend. so basically there was delay in signing the form from the people. because of that all this happened.

Now my ISS advisor say i should take either of the decision such as travel and re-entry or apply for reinstatement as soon as possible. Actually i thought of making travel and re-entry but i donno is it possible at the present stringent rule of immigration. right now am just confused. Have you been in this situation and if you could suggest me which is better option i will be really really greatful to you.

Thank you Waiting for ur reply

I am also in a similar situation...i applied for re instatement and it is the best option...which you have to do immediately.
Ultimately, its pretty much requesting with your DSO, to USCIS that, i have been out of status unknowingly and requesting for reinstatement to f1 since my graduation is very important and you can do it on that basis.
School will help you till the maximun possible extent.
SO it is better.
I would not suggest travel! - but i am not a pro either!
Hence apply for reinstatement - which i am also doing....its a pain since you have a lot of paper work...which i am doing too!
And it has been successful for a lot of people before! as far as i know...as you have better support since we ( u and School ) are requesting USCIS and when you are travelling - even verification might delay your entry - which is not good!
But the only minus in both tehse options is it takes 90 days at most for you to get reinstated!
