Hi,
I am currently a 3rd year Ph.d student in Univ. of Connecticut in Materials science. I came to mumbai for F1 visa stamping as mine is change of status from H4 to F1. I was handed a yellow form and was asked to send thru email the following documents at the earliest like DS157,CV, Invite letter from US and Technical Questionaire i got from the US consulate at mumbai website. I am a fully funded student, halfway thru ph.d . I do not understand the reason for not stamping visa right away. I was handed a yellow form under 221g section. I have already submitted my documents in 2 days of time. MY question is how long does it take to process my visa. and how much is the approval rate.
i m really concerned as i m funded during the summer. My return ticket is on 2nd july. THe processing time in their receipt email is given up to 12 weeks.
Please post some response for the minimum duration and approval rates.

Hi Girija

I had a very similar experience. I am going to the US for the first time for PhD in Mechanical Engg at Purdue Univ. I am a fully funded student (funded for 4 years).

I had my VISA interview in Mumbai on 23 June. I was handed a yellow form under sec 221g and asked to send an email with exactly the same attachments as yours. The VO said that it might take as less as two weeks to get a decision about the VISA application, but the website mentions explicitly (and many times over) that the processing time is about 10 to 12 weeks.

Girija, did the consular officer mention any time frame to you? Unfortunately, my guess about the approval rate and the duration for response is as good as yours. Have you got any response from them till now?

Hi niranjan,
i got reply from US embassy mumbai stating that the visa application has been received and i need to submit my passport along with the yellow slip and yellow envelope. Although the reply does not contain any answer as to whether the visa has been approved or not. So i m also not sure abt the reply whether it means the approval or not. The VO had told me that the application processing might take 8-10 weeks but the faster i submit, processing will take shorter time.
I will be submitting passport t'rrow after that i do not really know how much time they will take to return it back.
best of luck,
girija

Hi Girija, Hi Niranjan,

I'm Kalindi Khadapkar going for PhD course in Chemical Engg @ Louisiana State University. My F1 visa interview was on 27th June at Mumbai & got yellow 221g.I sent email with required docs(Technical Questionnaire,DS157,CV,Offer letter etc)on 29th June.I got an automated reply mentioning that I'll receive a confirmation email for the receipt of my docs.I waited for 1 week but didnt receive any such email from them, meanwhile I learnt that people do get such a confirmation mail within 2-3 days after submitting the docs,so I resent the docs on 7th July still there is no reply for the receipt of docs. What ur experience says?Did u receive such a confimation mail from them? What would u suggest, should I enquire abt this? I would be glad if u share ur experiences and guide me, this process is really frustrating!

Regards,

Kalindi

Hi kalindi,
Yes i had got one automated response as well as confirmation email abt the receipt of documents. You better get in touch with them. Call the embassy and let them know about it. As this will unnecessarily delay the duration. Bcoz after i submitted the confirmation email about the receipt of documents, it took 6 weeks from the date of submission at least stating to submit the passport. In recent email also there is nothing specified whether it has been approved or not. SO i am also not sure whether there will be more waiting time or we have to wait and watch.
Best of luck,
Clear you doubts as early as possible,

Similar situation - yellow form 221g

Hi Girija,

I am in a similar situation, although for H1B. I completed my PhD last year, and switched from F1 to H1. I had my visa interview mid-June, and got the 221(g) yellow form. After submitting my documents, I just got an automated response, no other confirmation.

Today, I received an email asking me to submit my passport, yellow form and yellow envelope to the VFS office, which I will do tomorrow. I am wondering how long it will take me to get my visa after that. Did you already get your visa or are you still waiting?

Thanks
Shah

Hi Girija,

Thank you very much for your reply and suggestion! I sent them an email mentioning that I just got an automated reply and no confirmation mail as said in that automated reply. I got a response in a single line "If you got a reply we are in receipt of your documents" thats it! But anyways I think that they must have received it and started processing already and I'll get my visa on time, lts hope for the best!

Have you got your passport back with the visa stamped on it? I hope you must have! Thank you very much once again, and All the best.

Regards,

Kalindi

Hi Shah,

Thank you for posting your experience, I'm very much relieved that getting a confirmation mail is not that important, they must have received my docs and started processing.I would just like to know that when did you submit your documents, I mean how many days it took for your processing.

Anyways congrats and I hope u get ur visa stamped soon!

Regards,

Kalindi

Hi Kalindi,
The process took me 27 days from my visa interview till the date I got this email. Hopefully another few days for the stamp - although some people have reported longer times there too.
Girija,
If you can confirm that you got your stamp, that will be great. In case, we don't hear from you, we will be optimistic and hope that you are already in the US!!!

@all

Hi,

I had my Visa Interview on 7th of July 2009 at Hyderabad consulate. It hardly took 1 minute for me to finish my interview. The officer just asked me about my specialization and about my family and typed something in his computer for a momnet and took out a white paper and said me that they will send my passport within 2 weeks. He didnt ask for any of the docs that I had. Just he kept my passport and I-20 with him.

It has already been 3 weeks and I haven't received any reply from them. I am going for a F1 visa.

Has anyone gone through a similar kind of situation before? How long will it take for them to complete the processing? I am worried as my reporting date at the school is nearing..

Your help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Krips.

How much time did it take to finally get the response to submit your passport? Also did your college interven to speed the process or something or we just have to do wait and watch game till the response comes.

They explicitly mention that we ccant contact them for at least 60days from the date of submission. I faced same situation. I had my F1 visa interview on 9th june, They gave me a yellow slip. I sent the mail with docs on 10th june. Now i have received a mail on 4th july saying I have to send my passport and yellow slip in the cover. I sent it today i.e 6th july.

Also, I had a previous case for J1 visa. That time I got the same yellow slip, same procedure. And after sending my passport in post, I got my J1 visa with in 3 working days .

I also am in the same situation. I had my H1B VISA interview on 9th July. The VO just asked me for how long I have been working for the current employer and handed an Yellow form. I filled the technical questionnaire and submitted the required docs on 12th July. Just got a automated reply mail. As they mention I cannot contact them before 60days, I am just waiting for a response.

Ravi, did you hear from the consulate? My husband had his interview at the Mumbai consulate on the 9th of July and he submitted the documents on the 12th (all for F1 OPT though). He has not heard from the consulate yet.

I attended my US J1 VISA interview at the Hyderabad consulate on February 16th, my application was placed on administrative processing under section 221(g), PINK SLIP. I promptly submitted my biodata and an invitation letter on February 19th, 2024 (EMAIL).

On March 22nd (AFTER 4 WEEKS OF INTERVIEW), I received another request for further documents, which I promptly provided on the same day.
MY CV, Letter of Invitation, Detailed Research Plan , Advisor CV

Still now my visa status remains under processing.
