F1 - ssn

One of my school paper has on it a Social Security Number, I did not even know that I had a SSN. I though that foreign students do not have a SSN.

Is this SSN valid only within the school as foreign student? Is this SSN a real one like any US Citizen?

If this is not a real SSN, can a F1 visa student request a SSN?

Was it started from 000-00-xxxx. If so, that was just the school assigned you a student number for easy reference in school system. I guess. You can only be granted a SSN (ID card) when you work for school under some conditions. Hope this can help because I was a F1 student for three years.

It most probably is a dummy id for school purposes.
SSA website shows a list of invalid area codes (first three), it must be one of those. Most probably starting with a 9.

its a pseudo number

much like wen I applied for Florida State University, they put a pseudo number under my ssn after I submitted my application

it is your school identification number. the only way you get your real ssn # while you are on a f-1 visa, if you get a job on campus. and for that purpose you will have to go to social security office to apply and provide them the hirring letter from the school that they are hiring you and other necessary paper work such as your i-20 and passport and visa.
but the number you found on your school papers is NOT your social security number like citizens.
hope thihs is helpful.
