I'm currently doing my Phd on a F-1 visa. I got a job offer from company A. I want to discontinue my Phd and file for an H-1? I've an Masters degree from here(US).

a) What is the paperwork required to file a H-1 visa in my case?

b) Should I be registered for classes to maintain legal status while my H-1 is getting processed?

c)How soon can I start working?

I really appreciate your time.
Thank You

not before you get your H1

As you are changing your status from F1 to H1 you can not work before you get your 797 approval notice of H1 visa.
(at least lawyer should inform you about your H1 approval)

Once you get your H1 you will get SSN to get offical pay check.

ssr1nag,

The paperwork required from your side would be
1. Your degree certificates/ Transcripts from Bachelor's onwards.
2. Your I-20 and I-94.
3. Copy of relevant pages of the passport (Front, Back, Visa etc).

And you have to fill the following forms from INS
1. I-129 with H supplement.
2. I-129W
3. Certified Labor condition Application.
Your lawyer will probably take care of the above documentation.

If you do premium processing(Form I-907) you will get the H1-B status in approximately 15 days. I got mine in 10 working days (Texas Service Center).
In my case i had OPT to prove my legal status. In your case i think you probably have to be registered in school till the date you get your H1-B. You cannot start working before then.

Please use this information as a reference only. Your Lawyer can give you the exact details.

All the best.
