Extending Student Visa

Hello All!

I have few questions about my student visa and would greatly appreciate any advice.

I am in the country for last three yrs. I graduated last year and then went on with a change in program level (joined the grad course) last fall. I just found that I did not submit the I-20 form back to the school, which they would have used to notify the INS.

Basically, it seems that I am out of status now and that I should be applying for \'reinstatement of status\'.

My current visa is due to expire in Aug 2002 and it seems that \'reinstatement of status\' usually takes about four months to be approved (I am assuming it would be approved as there have been no violations).

If INS doesn\'t make a decision on the \'reinstatement of status\' before my current visa expires, what situation would I be then? Would I have to leave the country then (even if the \'reinstatement of status\' is ultimately approved)?

The other option seems to leave the country now and apply for a fresh student visa after five months.

Please suggest.

Thanks in advance!
