Expiring Passport while applying for Green card

Hi!
I'm working under H1-B visa. I intend to apply for Green card. My passport is going to expire in another 5 months. If I renew the passport now, do I need to get the H1-B stamping in the new passport? Can you please tell me, whether the passport renewal necessitates any other formalities before
applying for Green Card?
Thanks in advance.

Renew you passport and apply

I would suggest you to renew your passport and apply for I-485. One of my friend had a RFE for his EAD since his passport was about to expire.

If you have a Indian passport, usually the consulates here would give you a new passport and cancel the old one , but not you Visa's on the old passport. If you need to travel, you might need to take both passports.

Hope this helps

Apply for a new passport rightaway as most of the procedures anywhere in the world require minimum 6 months of passport validity.

As gc_vsc has said, the consulate will cancel all the pages of your old passport EXCEPT the visa page which will still be valid.

The consulate will staple together both the passports by themselves.

Even if they dont, you staple the back cover of new passport to the front cover of the old passport and will have to necessarily carry BOTH the passports whenever you travel.

Thank you for both of you, for your quick and detailed reply!
I'm having an Indian passport. I was worried whether I need to go back to India to get the H1 stamped in the new passport, before applying for the Green card. From your replies, I guess I need not go back to India to get the stamping done..

Have a nice day!
