Expired passport: Proplem for interview?

Hi,

I will soon have an interview based on marriage. My passport has been expired for sometime now, and I am from a country ( :mad: ) which doesn't renew passports in the Embassies/ Consulates. They want my presence back home where the passports are issued. Do you think this will create a problem at the interview? Or will the officer understand the situation and issue the GC withough a stamp in the passport?

What country is that? Can they issue then a letter or an emergency travel document that you can attach to your passport? Or ask if they can add and stamp to your old passport and sign by the Consul in that case.
I think you should have a valid document plus you need a valid passport to travel.

I can certaily get a tentative piece of paper stating my citizenship. But will the INS officer be willing to stamp this paper?

I’m in a same situation. My passport expired long time ago and to renew it I either have to go back home (the Embassy will issue me a temporary piece of paper, but I don’t want this option, since getting a new passport over there will take up to two months), or I have to provide them with a copy of my Green Card. Sounds familiar? :(

I’m in AOS process as well. Do not worry. The expired passport won’t be a problem.
The main reason they ask to bring it to the interview is because INS wants to make sure you came to this country legally, with a real visa.
Bring your expired passport to your interview along with your I-94 and everything else they asked in the letter.
Also, INS is trying to eliminate the stamping procedure and stamping is optional now. Only if you ask, otherwise they won’t stamp anything.

Thank you very much for your input. We're in exact same boat. I do have a valid US driver's license, which will do well as an ID. I also have copies of every page of my expired passport. Unfortunately, I don't have the passport itself, as I sent it back home to see if my parents could exchange it without my presence. No luck, our "honorable" passport dept seized my old passport saying I don't need to have it. So I will walk in the interview with valid US ID, and with copies of my passport. I hope the officer will understand.
