Expired passport, AP valid, travel to 3rd country possible?

Hi
I recently received renewed Advanced Parole. My passport expired in September (russian). As far as I could get, US recognizes Russian passports up to 6 months after expiration (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd like to take a short vacation and choices are: Dominican Republic or Puerto Rico resorts.
Dominican Republic (DR) is completely different country and I have to go through customs (I did this twice already when my passport was valid). (1) Will they let me enter the country with US AP and expired russian passport? Im spending my money there after all (that's what tourists do aint they?) (2) Will US Custom let me back in the country? (3) What's the situation with Puerto Rico - is it part of the US or not? I talked to one lady from Puerto Rico here in US and she says Drivers license is all what's required to go there and back.

I'd like to phrase the main question differently. Has anybody entered US with expired passport on Advanced Parole only? At least, provide your thoughts, guesses and theories, Please.
