Expert Advice needed: Travelled when AP Pending

I had an old AP approved till Jan 4, 2004. I wanted to travel in December so in anticipation, I had applied for a renewal of AP in August. The renewal AP wasn't approved till the travel date so
I had to travel anyway with the old AP and I came back before Jan 4 on that.

Now my AP renewal is still pending and I am confused if that application is invalid as I travelled outside when it was pending.

Experts please comment.

Whenever you can find time, can you elaborate why?

I remember that "travelling when AP application is pending invalidates the application", the reason for confusion. I am really curious about this.

Where did you read that statement? The only application /petition that gets invalidated by travel is change of status (for example H4 to h1).
The only travel advisory for AP is that it is "better" to have an approved and valid AP in hand before going out of USA (and of course, should have a valid AP while coming back in)
