I got my green card last May in Vermont center and found out that the first and last names were switched. I then moved to California. Last October I visited San Jose INS and did I90 by showing them the birth certificate with the correct name. Feb 2003 I called CA service center and found out that my card had been sent out last Nov, but returned for whatever reason. They took my address (I think I provided the correct one when doing I90) and waited. Since I got case number through the call, I was keeping track of the status. Last Friday, it's finally changed to "carded delivered..." and I got it yesterday.
Lessons:
1. Sometimes INS was quicker than expected.
2. After doing I90 for replacement of card, call in to get your case number and keep track of the progress.
