Expedited Passports

Hi all,

I had my interview today along with my wife and we are scheduled to take the oath this Friday 6/25/2010. We are traveling on 7/13/2010 overseas for a month. Anybody knows or has experience of expedite passport application? how soon can we get our passports? we already paid $8000 for tickets and we really need the vacation and the time off.

Somebody at work applied a couple of weeks ago for his passport via the expedited route and he got his passport in his hand in just one week. It is very quick indeed.

You can get same day passport by going to a passport agency. Same day implies same day or next day depending on what time you reach there. You will need to book appointment at least one week in advance by calling the 800#, so start calling now. This will give you sufficient time for visa also.

Call the 800 #. Get an appointment. Get a travel ticket within 15days of the appointment. If your appointment time is before 11:00 AM I think, you will get the passport the same day. Otherwise probably next day. Also check if Washington Passport office issues same day passport card. If not, go to other office which does issue same day passport. Here are the links

Thanks all folks. My oath ceremony is on 6/25/2010. My travel is on 7/13/2010. I don't think I can call and book an appointment right now till after the oath ceremony, right? on Friday and after the ceremony can I call and book an appointment within 14 days of my travel or is it that the time when I call to book must be within 14 days f my travel?

I think scheduling an appointment needs to happen if you're traveling within 14 days of your making that phone call. Be mindful whether you need visas to any place you're visiting after you have become American citizens but did not need with your current citizenship.

It is not necessarily the case that if a passport agency appointment is before 11am, you get the passport on the same day. At least this is not the case at the Chicago passport agency, where I got my passport. There they issue passports in 0-3 days, depending on how soon the travel date is after the appointment date. A colleague of mine had a travel date about 10 days from the appointment date; his appointment was on a Thursday and his passport was ready on Tuesday of the following week. In my case my appointment was early in the morning on a Friday, and my travel was on Sunday (two days later); my passport was ready on Friday afternoon.
Also, when I asked the passport agency about getting a passport card as well, they said that they can accept the application but cannot produce the card right then and there (apparently the card is printed at a different facility and not at the passport agency).
 
I am in a similar situation. Is there any merit in applying for the passport right after the oath ceremony. Heard that it is the best place to submit passport application documents. And then follow up with the appointment. Or should I just go ahead with the appointment in one of the agencies. I have an international travel 10 days after my oath ceremony.

You cannot apply for a passport at the oath and "then follow up with the appointment". You can only do one or the other.

The first option is to apply for a passport at the oath (assuming there will be someone there accepting passport applications; many oath ceremonies arrange this) or at a post office and request expedited processing. For expedited processing the passport will be ready and mailed to you in something like 10-20 days, with the naturalization certificate being mailed back a few days after the passport.

The second option is to make an appointment at a passport agency. In that case the passport will be ready in 0-3 business days and you'll pick it up yourself together with the naturalization certificate.

I would suggest that you use the second option since you need to travel in 10 days after the oath. Some people reported cases where an expedited processing passport arrived in less than 10 days, but, IMO, it is too much of a risk for you to count on that.

If you have travel scheduled in 10 days, you should ditch the idea of submitting application at oath ceremony and make an appointment at the nearest passport agency. Hope you don't need any visas for your international travel. And I definitely hope your current citizenship is not Indian since there is another process called surrendering one's Indian citizenship which will further delay getting an Indian visa.

I need to travel to Canada for work. Once I have the US Passport that should work. Seems like I will not be applying for the passport at the oath ceremony and will call in that afternoon to schedule an appointment at the nearest passport agency. Any specific document to be taken to the passport agency apart from the trip itinerary.

You don't need to wait until after the oath to call the passport agency to schedule an appointment. You may (and, IMO, should) call the passport agency before the oath and schedule an appointment for 1-2 days after the oath. If you call the day of the oath, you will not be able to schedule an appointment for a few days (maybe even a week) after the oath, since they only schedule a limited number of people per day and the schedule is usually filled up for several days ahead. At least that has been my experience when dealing with the Chicago passport agency.
