Entry on previous H1B?

I have a valid H1B until 05/07. I received a new I797 valid till 12/09. If I go to Tijuana to get my H1B stamping now and in case my application falls under security/background check, can I come back on my old valid visa?

Would the consulate cancel my current visa in such a situation?

Probably you will not have your passport till the visa application is decided by the consulate. If officer wants to deny your visa then he can also cancel your previous visa.
