entry level question - how do I find out where my 485 is pending at?

I'm under an impression that I should file my EAD and AP application to where my 485 is pending. But how do I find out? Is it the address on the lower left corner of my 485 receipt, or the office I filed my 485?

Many thanks.

you might be able to do them online. check the forms and it will tell you. and is also pissible that it goes to a national office first and then to the local office. but it is not like you can just send them to the local office. send them to where the application says and then they will let you know. also, if doing ap, i hope you weren't an illegal. if so, don't waste your money since it possible that even if they tell you that it is okay to leave and comeback, customs when you are coming back may turn you around. weird and stupid i know, but is possible. so don't do it.

thanks theInquisitor for your reply.

I filed my family-based 485 through the pilot program in Dallas district office last year. I recieved my last EAD & AP at Dallas district office through in person application last year. This year they told me to mail my application.

I checked INS website, it instructs to send to Chicago for all family-based cases. But the Dallas pilot program seesm to not fall in that category. They didn't explian clearly, that's why I'm lost.

We also applied through DORA, but more recently and have not been interested in getting AP or EAD.

However, from what I gather, your first ones, which you got through an appointment they provided you(after your case not completed in 90 days) have expired. Since they told you to mail it, I believe the Chicago address is correct. Your EAD/AP should be processed at the National Benefits Centre in Missouri - the applications are sent there from the Chicago Lockbox.

The first time was different, b/c it was an in-person application due to already waiting 90 days.

to pinaoplayer- follow up question

I got this from INS website under the Dallas pilot program:

"Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) (first time & renewals):
If at any point in the DORA Pilot process it is determined that your case cannot be completed within 90 days, you will be sent additional instructions on what to do/expect next. You will be scheduled to receive your card within 90 days. If for some reason you have not received your employment card after 90 days, you come in person With an INFOPASS appointment to check the status of the application. If you are renewing your EAD card, the above still applies. "

As u can see, the instruction not very clear, it gave me an impression that I should apply for my 2nd EAD/AP through Infopass at the district office.

What do you think? Did I misread?

Yes, I see what you mean. Perhaps you are right. The problem is that procedures can be different for DORA than for regular processing and they probably did not anticipate that people like you would still be waiting with DORA.

The people that told you to file by mail, was that the phone line by any chance? Or did they tell you that at the Dallas Office? If the office told you so, file by mail. If not, make an Infopass appointment and try to file there. If they dont allow you then, I guess you have to mail it then.

I wouldnt trust the phone line, b/c they dont know much about DORA. I think your reading of the words may be correct, so try the office first, unless they were the ones that told you to mail it in.

By the way, when you have a sec., please post your timeline for us. Is your name check pending?

I went to the district office with an Infopasss appointment I made myself a week ago. But I wasn't even let into the office. The lady at the prescreening window told me I should mail it. But I didn't ask her where caz back then I didn't think it was this difficult to find out a freaking mailing address (forgive my language). Plus based on my experience with INS people, all customer service people are under trained and give out wrong information all the time. So I can't bring myself to totally trust what she said.

Fast forward to this morning. My husband got a phone call from the paralegal that handled my 485. She said the Dallas office no longer process AP so looks like I'll have to send them to Chicago.

My status (don't know how to use those acrynoms)

458 filed June 05 through Pilot
485 pending since then
got AP and EAD on spot in Sept 05
now I have to idea which stage I'm at, or whether name check is complet. How do you find that out anyway? when I check my status online, it's always the same message posted June 05.

BTY, I just started learing piano as an adult beginener.... I know this is irrelevent, but can't help noticing your ID. Do you play?

I wouldnt either.

Thats what I also thought initially, but then the wording on the DORA page...I know that Dallas does not routinely process AP, but for DORA? The issue is whether you just get that one in-person time after 90 days or whether any subsequent ones can also be done that way.

Yes, I do, but after my bachelors, I decided to exchange the rigors of practicing piano(5hrs min. per day) for the rigors of law.

to pinaoplayer - confirming

5 hrs a day! That's insane. Congrats to switching to 8 hrs a day reading super dry and ambiguous text...

So you think Chicago is the place to send my application, after all?

I dont know if I should be insulted!! ...he he, just kidding. Super dry and ambiguous text it can be at times for sure...

I went to DORA page and I think Chicago sounds right. I know that they allow you to apply for AP and EAD in person at the office, once you receive the 70 day letter, but that has already happened for you. You are now in need for another one. There are no instructions for this on there, only "if you need to apply for EAD/AP at any point during the process, you can". (not exact quote).

You could make another Infopass and try to convince someone there, but perhaps the easiest is to apply the regular way. That way you dont waste more time trying to get Infopass appointment.

Good luck

Yes, but I had been doing it for over 10 years! Some good times, some frustrating times. Every job/career has it I guess.
