Hi Guys,

I will be going for vacation out of the country and re-entering the U.S. using the I-551 stamp in my passport. Given how low-tech the I-551 stamp is, I am very concerned as to what other documents I need to carry to support the authenticity of the stamp? Could you please let me know... anyone recently travelled like that?

I have some other questions as well:

1. Will I have to undergo Secondary Inspection? What does that mean to the Port-of-Entry immigration process?

2. Do I need to fill in a new I-94 Form while entering the country?

3. At the port of entry, can I stand in the line for Permanent Residents and U.S. Citizens?

Thanks!

Nothing else is required. If you want keep a copy of the approval notice (really it has no value -- just to keep you happy !!)

1. Maybe - depends on POE. They just verify your status using A#

2. You are PR now ..... no need for I-94
3. Same -- you are a PR -- act like one ;) ;)

Enjoy !

Some times, POE wants to check if the stamp is genuine (not Fake) by examining the 'special red ink' of the stamp. To check the originality of the 'special red ink' POE may take you to different room. Also pulls up status info on your 485 by using EAC# or A#.

POE is strict to verify your length of abroad stay is less than 6 months without 're-entry permit'

The "special red ink" applies to the stamp an alien receives in consular processing - from US consulate. Normally POE is careful for first time entry of CP applicants - to make sure the bearer of this stamp is the right person.

But most of the USCIS district offices don't put that red ink stamp for I-485 applicants. My temporary stamp was not red at all - it was blue. I passed LAX aiport POE twice with temporary stamp and never had any secondary inspection. The officers entered the A# in computer and let me enter. Second time officer asked me to show my driver license though.

Time frame for card reciept after I-551 stamp

Hello,
I recieved my I-551 stamp yesterday for the first time after 2 years 11 months of marriage, I asked the officer if I would recieve a 10 year card since the law states if you become a permanent resident after 2 years of marriage, you automatically get a 10 year card. She told me "yes" I would get a 10 year card.
My question is :
Has anyone had a similar situation and was given a 10 year card because they were married for over 2 years at the time they first recieve their green card ?
The officer made the stamp (I-551) expire in 1 year she told me it takes about 6 months to get the card in the mail, does it really take that long ?

Please share your experiences

If you got your GC based on your marriage to an US citizen and its more than 2 years since you were married, you will get 10 year card. Two years of conditional GC does not apply to you as you got your GC after 2nd anniversary of your marriage.
