Endorsement of marriage on passports

I was going through the documents that i received with my packet-3. there was one sheet called the OF-169 supplement which mentions something to the effect that if we are married, the passports should be amended to reflect the fact.

how relevant or important is this ? if it is what do u we have to do on our passports ?
