Employment With I-765 But No SSN?

Hello,

So my mom is in the I-485 process and I know that could take a while (I've been down that road once.) She changed her status and now is getting her I-765 (employment authorization) but does not have a social security number. How does that work? When she gets her I-765 (it was approved yesterday) can she gain employment without a SSN? Most employers ask for an SSN...Any insights?

Thanks,

Once she gets the I-765 approved she can use it to apply for the SSN, which will be issued in 2-4 weeks. The SSN office will immediately give her a letter or receipt showing that she applied for the SSN.

Employers are not supposed to ask for the SSN until after actually giving a job offer, and usually they don't ask for the SSN before the first day of work. They should allow her to work without the SSN if she shows the employment card and proof of applying for the SSN. But they may delay her paycheck until she gives them the SSN.
