Employment Discrimination - Asylum Seeker

The university career center has told me that most employers seek citizens or perm residents for employment - so they refuse to change my work authorization status so I can connect with employers.. However since it is illegal to discriminate when hiring, how can I handle this?

Is it illegal to discriminate against asylum seekers who seek work when hiring? If so, what can I do?

I think this is an interesting topic that must be addressed by knowledgeable people. As long as one has a work permit that can be renewable, thus for immigration, I think there should be no discrimination.
I understand that employers wants to avoid OPT since it is only for short-term, and the need of more paperwork to sponsorize the person for H1, but this is not the case for the asylum applicant's related work permit.
You or someone else should consult with an experienced lawyer.
