Ginnu, others,

My father passed away and I have to rush to India immediately. I'm getting my latest H1 approval notice today from my employer. Our last Stamps expired May'2003 and I have not left the US after that.
Can you Tell me if I need to take any extra care for getting my H1 renewed from Delhi consulate?

I'm taking these documents with me:
Recent and Previous H1 and H4 approval notices
Recent Pay Stubs
Employment Letter
Edu Certificates
Experience letters
Bank statements
W2s
Copies of 1040s(Just photocopies of the paper returns)
Utility bills
Proof of Residence(Rent statements)
SSN cards
Marriage Certificate
Birth Certificate of US born Daughter(Not needed for us)

Do I need to setup an appointment?
Am I eligible for Drop-Box?
How much time they are taking to issue a new Stamp after approving it?
I may be there for upto 2 months. Is it ok?
Do I need to register our US born daughter with local police authorities?

Any other suggestions in this hour of need are greatly appreciated.

Extremely sorry to hear about your loss. :( Our sincere condolences from all the readers and participants of this forum.

I think you are OK with all the documents that you are taking.

As soon as you reach Delhi, first apply for the visa.Since you are going to stay there for 2 months, I feel you have ample time to get your visas stamped in the case of any delay - only potential problem may be if your names(s) get hit for security clearance. Even then you should be OK.

I am not familiar with the procedure at Delhi Consulate, hence I would leave it for others to comment upon.

Thanks GCChaahiye,

One more question, Which I-94 do I handover at the time of leaving?

The latest one, The first one I got at the time of entry or all i have received so far?

Thanks

Extremely sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.
Regarding I-94's, just staple all of them together and surrender all to the Airline when you leave the US. It shows that you have always been in status in the US.

I suggest that you surrender your latest I-94 only which is still valid.

Though rg585 may be right,I feel if you return the old expired I-94s,the airlines or others whoever deal with the I-94s, if they see them separately, may assume that you had been illegally present in the US which may create unnecessary problems.

Your latest valid I-94 is excellent proof of your legal status. They will know that you have left within the period allowed.

Thanks for your help guys,

If I Surrender my latest I-94, what would be the duration of my new I-94 when I come back? Is it based on the validity of the H1 approval notice?

Very sorry for the loss. Hopefully, it would be good that you might be able to spend two months there.

Usually all the I-94s will have the same number, and so one usually gives all the I-94s to the airline staff upon leaving.

Drop box has been discontinued in Delhi for almost all applicants (as of June 30, 2004). http://newdelhi.usembassy.gov/wwwhpr62204.html

Yes.

When you fill out the visa application at the consulate,if I am not wrong, there is a question which asks " till when do you intend to stay in the US" or something to this effect, where you would have to give the expiry date of your current H1B approval notice.Your passport will contain the visa valid upto this date and upon your arrival in the US, same expiry date on your new I-94.
