Hi All,

I did go though earlier e-mails but could not get a clear idea on this.

I'm a GC holder since Jan 2001 and would become eligible for Citizenship in Jan 2006. (90 days before). I've been almost living continuously in US
since Jan 2001 with hardly a months break in between.

Now, my question is , In 2006 Jan can i apply for Citizenship and also for a two year re-entry permit ,parallelly to go to india for higher studies.

My intention of continuing to live in US remains as i'm planning to come back after the higher studies. Now, will that be a sufficient reason for me to get a re-entry permit.? Will that form a sufficient reason to convince the office at port of entry.? (Assuming I maitain ties with US and file my taxes regularly)

Will it in anyway cause any issues during the citizenship process.?

Any information is highly appreciated.

-thanks,

Hello JoeF,

Thanks for your reply.I'm still not very clear.Assuming I continue to work in california until Jan 2006 continuously and then apply for Citizenship and re-entry permit simultaneously. Will it be possible for me to give an address of a close relative for immigration correspondence and say comedown to US for fingerprints, interview etc, but continue studying abroad on re-entry permit.?

-thanks again,

Your idea sounds good but as JoeF said, it won't work. You have to be in the US (except for short trips abroad)while your application is pending. For a safer side, consult a lawyer. In my opinion, don't even risk it. Just wait for 1 year or so to get your citizenship first and then go wherever you want. The last thing you want is to get a simple case into a complicated one.
