Effect of extension denial on a 10-year visitor visa

My parents have 10 year multiple entry visitor visas. Their current I-94s expire in September. They would like to extend their stay for a few more months. We browsed the USCIS website and got information regarding the form to use etc. But a few things are still unclear:

1. If the application for extension is denied, would this affect their 10 year visitor visa in anyway? If so, is it possible that their 10 year visa could get cancelled?
2. Also, if the extension is denied, will they need to leave the US immediately or can they complete the duration of stay as indicated on the original I-94?

Any information on the above is appreciated.

Thanks.

My Parents have applied for extension of stay in thier last visit and were denied. They left about two weeks after the recieving the denial letter. This was in May '04. They have 10 year VISA. They came back on May 19 '05 through SFO and were granted 6 month stay. They were not asked about the previous stay.
