Congrats on getting your plastic cards!! I have my interview on 01/11/02, just wanted to ask you a couple of questions:

1. Do you know that if I could make U-Turn at the PoE (1000 Islands specifically) to go back to Canada after submitting application and other formalities at INS office? The main purpose is to get the plastic cards sooner. I have no information on how soon will I get the cards if my PoE is Rainbow Bridge, Niagara Falls.

2. Did you take Hwy-137 to I-81 to enter US?

CPer @ Montreal who might have done somthing like this or have idea, please reply.

Thanks in advance.
Sky

U-Turn should be no problem

Once you get admitted as PR, you are PR. Should be no problem what so ever. PR can go to Canada and back freely.

BTW, Wondering if you are going to carry your original supporting documents for the interview or you have submitted along with Packet 3.

Thanks.

Thanks Jiang for replying. My concern arose from the fact that my wife would be staying in Canada for 3 more months while I will be in US. Should we clear our intentions at PoE or we don\'t have to ..

My lawyer submitted I-134 and IRS-9003 in original along with P3 but the copies of all other documents, so I will have to take my originals ..

Dear Sky,

1. Immediate return to Canada is posiible from what I am hearing
from others.
When you are done with your I-551 stamping and hit the road,
you will see the 81 South and North.
I too avoided the Buffalo borders because of the crowd and the
possible delay of the plastic cards.

2. I only had to take 401 and then I-81. Not aware of the Hwy-137
Please note I was coming from Toronto. (I went to Toronto after
my interview at Montreal, then from Toronto I came to USA. I-81 is
just an exit off of Hwy 401)

Good Luck with your interview.
Eelavan.

Yes, you can.

Just make sure that there is no traffic sign prohibiting a U-turn. :)

As an aside, while it may help you complete the POE ritual quickly, I don\'t know if it also assures you of a quick turnaround in receiving plastic cards. Time to receive plastic cards has varied considerably. Recently, someone got their cards in a month with JFK as POE, while another person got the cards after five months with Ogdensburg, NY as POE.

I would not worry about it

If you and your wife have a separate package, she can come in later and separately. But if you only have one, why bother to tell them you want to go back right away to complicate things. Once you are PR, you can leave the country freely as long as you stay in the States no less than 183 days in a year to keep your PR status.

BTW, if you go Niagara Falls, I would prefer Lewiston bridge over Rainbow. Normally, officers in Lewiston are more friendly. This is based on my experience of almost daily commute from Falls to Buffalo a year ago.

Thanks gcDrone ... I had to wait about an hour for my wife\'s H-4 last year at Niagara Falls b4 we were called by the officer. So I am kinda hesitant to repeat my feat at Rainbow Bridge.

And about getting the plastic card, I heard that someone got in less than 2 week and PoE was Dallas Airport. I assuming that might have been LIFO case.

Thanks Jiang,

I have always avioded the Peace Bridge as I had known that officers there are not that friendly. And since the Queenston Bridge is mainly for Trucks, I never tried it and also heard that long trucks lines were seen due to increased security after 9-11 attacks. 1000 Islands is \'almost\' on the way and Eelavan\'s turn around time was really short so I am kinda tempted to cross the border from there ... later

How about Aut 15 South / US 87?

How about heading straight for the border from Montreal - south on Aut 15 that becomes US 87? It is about an hour from Montreal.

Does anybody know if the wait is long?

Thanks Eelavan, I think I did see a sign for I-81 on Hwy-401 when I went to Ottawa last year. I was just making sure that you used the same PoE. Thanks for ur reply ..

Jiang, I think we will only have one packet for both of us and I would rather not prefer "follow-to-join" option. Furtherore I don\'t think 183 days requirement is strictly enforced for Canadians, as you don\'t even need passport at the border crossings hence no record of duration of stay in either country...

gcDrone, I wish I could take Hwy-15 to --> I-87 --> to I-287 --> to my home in NJ :) ... but my wife would be staying back in Hamilton so I have to drive in that direction anyhow ... looks like I am stuck with 14 hrs of drive as opposed to 5-1/2 hrs.
