economic hardship + CPT

I was wondering whether it is legal to work close to 40 hours per week during school, where 20 hours comes from economic hardship and 20 hours from CPT.

Thanks.

How did you get an F1 visa if you did not have sufficient funding?

As a practical point, how do you expect to be able to study? Failure will get you dismissed from the university. If you are dismissed, the DSO will notify US immigration.

Economic hardship is hard to prove. CPT is also difficult to get; it is supposed to be an integral part of the program.

Thanks for the reply Concerned4us,

I already got my economic hardship and it is still valid. Now, my question is whether my 40 hours will be lawful provided I manage to get CPT approval and, thus accumulate 20 CPT hours with 20 economic hardship hours.

Thanks.

It sounds like you do not yet have CPT. Remember CPT must be part of the curriculum and can be unpaid internships/practicums.

Talk to your DSO. If you qualify for both, it would certainly be preferable for you to have one employer unless your hardship is a work-study option on campus.

Remember the rule of thumb is that you should expect to study 3 hours outside of class for every credit hour so 15 hours equates to 60 hours per week - 15 for class time and 45 for study.
