Filed as NIW(research), I think using a lawyer for NIW case is very useful, especially when a ref is requested. I heard many people who did their NIW on their own and got approved even sooner than those with a lawyer, but I also see a DIY friend who published more paper than me and got ref for I140, then spend another month collecting additional evidence to respond that ref. now they are still waiting on their 140 decision.

My lawyer is not patient with me everytime I called him but he didn't miss any step. I don't think my case would be as smooth as it appeared to me now without him, at least I wouldn't know how to respond that ref I got. GOOD LUCK to ALL GC goers, this is the 9th year since I came to US as a student, and FINALLY......

RD(spouse) 4/11/2005: my husband forgot to sign his check, so the pkg was returned and we had to resend it.

I485 REF 07/14/2005: It was a weird ref, my layer said he never saw one like it. It asks for proof of having worked 5 years in contracted area as a doctor or a copy of Labor certificate. My lawyer said it must be requested by a very new officer, and it doesn't apply to me at all. Even though I am a MD, but I am applying as a researcher. Anyway, this ref made me so worried that I lost a few nights' sleep.

I485 REF responded 7/28/2005: my lawyer reponded it. He said he just wrote a few sentences, I don't know the detail.
