My credentials:
- PhD and MS from arguably the topmost university in my field.
- Currently working for a corporate research lab.
- Five papers (3 first author); five conference presentations
- One invited talk.
- Seven recommendation letters of which two were from people not known to me directly
- Sigma Xi, IEEE, and one more society membership (got a letter from the third society that membership is restricted only to accomplished researchers in my field)
- Reviewed papers a few times
- Three patent filings
- Very little citations and so did not mention this; however I submitted one page written by a reviewer of one of my papers that said: "The xx method developed by Dr. xx and colleagues at xx is of particular note"
- No awards
- Got my PhD less than 3 years back, but recommendation letters said that the work I did during my PhD was outstanding and well received etc.
I used my company attorneys (a big city firm). However I wrote the letters myself and prepared a draft of the cover letter.
I purchased some DIY kits from greencardapply.com long back. There are somewhat helpful if you know how to use them. They help in getting you oriented to the whole issue, but are not helpful beyond that point. Some hints are very outdated and hilarious. They are not expensive though, and so one could get them. But dont rely on them to solve your case.
VSC is cruising at red hot speeds. The current processing date is DEC 24, 2004. So rest assured, your approval is for real. I was similarly surprised couple weeks back, and was skeptical until my approval notice arrived. But it did arrive. No qualms anymore.
