EAD is definitely useful for your spouse (secondary applicant or dependent), Since you spouse can work after getting the EAD.
For primary applicant, it is useful when 180 days have been passed, and he/she is laid off. Then its quite useful to find a new job on EAD( Since some companies don\'t want to take the hassle of applying H1 etc, so having EAD in such a situation is really helpful)
Disadvantage of using EAD is that if for some reason ur GC is denied, then you\'ll be out of status, where as if you were on H1, then you can continue on ur H1 (even if GC is denied or you have to reapply again etc)
Again, you should understand the difference between having a EAD and using an EAD. You can have EAD and still continue working on H1, without any harm.
So my advise, apply for your EAD, but try to be on H1 always, unless you have no other choice.
